Cuenca, day two. We survived an unusually cold evening in Cuenca. No heat in these hotels and houses. They are not used to gringos with thin blood from Georgia. Especially, after surviving an inferno in Georgia for four months. I thought Becky couldn't handle the cold. But we saw a young Cuencana at a coffee shop with more shawls and scarfs on then you would think possible. Becky thought she was being stylish - I don't think so.
Went apartment shopping. Found a really nice apartment. It is a 20 minute walk from the middle of old town (where our language school is located - more on that later), 5 minute bus ride (25 cents), 5 minute cab ride ( $ 1.50). Transportation is incredibly cheap. Gas is $2.00 per gallon. The apartment is fully furnished, including bed linens, all appliances (think washer and drier), linens, etc. It is two full bedrooms, one small bedroom/office, three full baths, all utilities, internet, 24 hour security , etc. We are on the fifth floor and have great views. Very reasonable price. We are very close to the bus line, so we have many transportation options. Visitors are welcome!
Celebrated with lunch at Las Columbianas. El menu del Dia. First course - Albondigas con yuca arueja a triena. Second course - Serode pollo commodore con ensalada. Jugo narana. Cost $1.50 per person. FYI, Ecuador uses US currency. We know how to splurge.
to Simon Bolivar Language School. We are set for lessons starting 9/12. They are very flexible which helps Becky with her consulting schedule. The have an affiliate travel agency that we can use to schedule tours, etc.
Off to the realtor to sign lease. Incredibly it is two pages, as compared to 10 legal size pages filled with microscopic legalese in the US. Remarkably (or maybe not so), it covered the same ground. Celebrated, again, with a trip to a coffee shop (remember the scarf girl?). Had a great coffee and some terribly wicked chocolate stuff. Cost- 5 times our lunch. So much for saving money.
Dinner at a nearby bar and lounge hangout for young people. Nothing changes. We are trying hard to figure out how to post pictures on the blog. Hopefully, tomorrow.
